Steve's interest in occupational hygiene began during his industrial training periods working in the darkrooms at Kodak and was nurtured in the lead industry at Chloride Batteries under the mentorship of the late Ray Higgins. After 6 years there, he moved to Thomson Laboratories, consulting environmental scientists, for whom he opened two branch offices and subsequently became Technical Director. From 1986 to 1993, he was Chief Executive of the National Occupational Hygiene Service Ltd, a registered charity providing consultancy, training and testing services. He has also operated his own successful consultancy business.
Steve obtained a First Class Honours in Applied Chemistry in 1975, and a year later, earned a Masters degree in Pollution and Environmental Control. His professional qualifications in occupational hygiene were obtained through the British Examining Board in 1981. He is a Chartered Scientist, Chartered Safety Practitioner and a Fellow of the Faculty of Occupational Hygiene.
In addition to his industrial and consulting work, Steve has taught widely in universities and colleges and on commercial short courses. Steve is happily married to Karyn with a grown-up son and daughter, whom he regards proudly as his life's greatest achievement.
