Number of submissions: In 2007 we had 157 submissions. This was 12% fewer than the previous year's record, but about double the number 10 years ago. The three leading sources of submissions in 2007, by address of first author, were US (41 papers), Sweden (18) and UK (17). In the past 5 years, first authors have come from 46 countries.

Handling time: For papers received between October 2006 and September 2007, the median time to send a first decision to authors, including peer review, was 6.3 weeks, a record. In all, 85% of first decisions were sent within 10.1 weeks. This is much faster than most journals in our field.

Publication time: Currently, papers are usually published online 6–10 weeks after receipt of the final version of the paper, and they usually appear in the online edition of an issue 9–13 weeks after receipt. Note that these are times from arrival of the final version—times from acceptance are shorter.

Rejection rate: For submissions in this period, our rejection rate was 51%. This is a slight increase over recent years. There is no right rejection rate—the aim is to publish what ought to be published and to improve or reject the rest.

Journal Impact Factor: Our 2006 Thomson Scientific Journal Impact Factor, announced in mid-2007, was 1.92, a new record, and an increase of 68% over the previous year. (However, as discussed by Ogden and Bartley (2008), the random variability of impact factors may be enough to encompass this change.)

Circulation: The number of institutions paying for access to the whole journal in 2007 was ~8% higher than in 2006 and 51% higher than in 2005. In addition, ~2400 institutions in developing countries get free or deeply discounted access. The number of full texts of papers downloaded from the online edition in 2007 was 289 238, an increase of 44% on 2006.
