Andy Gillies, President BOHS, 20062007
Andy Gillies is Managing Director of Gillies Associates Limited, an independent EH&S consultancy based in Norfolk, England, specializing in provision of occupational hygiene and environmental management support services. Andy has spent his entire professional career working in these areas. Beginning in 1978, he gained an MSc in occupational hygiene from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine immediately after graduating with a 2.1(Hons) degree in Biochemistry and Physiology from Sheffield. His early career was spent working for the British Steel Corporation (now Corus), and later Thomson Laboratories, a leading occupational hygiene consultancy group based in Milton Keynes. During this time he successfully completed his professional studies, gaining the Diploma of professional competence in occupational hygiene in 1983. He was also the recipient of the Esso/BOHS Bursary Award to young hygienists and undertook a short study tour to examine occupational health provision in Scandinavian countries. He joined the Dow Chemical Company in 1986 as Senior Occupational Hygienist for the UK manufacturing operations. His interest in environmental issues led to part-time study and the award of an MSc in Environmental Management from UMIST in 1994. Andy established Gillies Associates Ltd in 1995 and since then he has worked with a wide-range of organizations covering many different topics and sectors. His particular areas of interest include integrated management of EH&S, barriers to effective exposure control, the roles of modelling and monitoring in estimating exposures, and the place of occupational health in the debate on sustainable development.His commitment to the profession of occupational hygiene and BOHS is long-standing. He is a Past President of the Institute of Occupational Hygienists (IOH), a former Hon. Secretary to the British Examining and Registration Board in Occupational Hygiene (BERBOH), Board and Council member, Environmental SIG chair and Oral Examiner.
Living in Norfolk with his beautiful wife Anne, he is a keen amateur sportsman who keeps fit through squash, tennis, golf and sundry other activities. He has never cured himself of a deep-rooted support for Bolton Wanderers (his home town club) and a love of the outdoors.
