In this issue we bring together some of the key papers presented at the 5th International Conference of the International Occupational Hygiene Association, held in Bergen, Norway, July 2002. We asked the Scientific Committee to select what they considered to be key papers, and then invited the authors to submit their papers for publication. These were subjected to peer review, and the resulting seven papers are included in this issue.
The papers collected here reflect some key themes that emerged at the conference. Appropriate for the location, offshore, maritime and extreme environments featured at the conference, and three of the papers in this issue are on these themes. The others are on topics that are of international interest and occur repeatedly in current literature: silica in construction; dust and other airborne pollutants from wood processing; bioaerosols; and occupational conditions in a developing country. The conference gave prominence both to local issues and to those of widespread international interest, and we are pleased that this sample of the papers reflects this also.
We also continue in this issue with the commemorations of BOHSs 50th anniversary, by reproducing in the on-line edition a classic paper from a past issue of the Annals, with a commentary in both the print and on-line editions. It is particularly appropriate that the classic paper in this issue is Sherwood and Greenhalghs 1960 paper which introduced the modern personal sampler. As John Cherrie points out in his commentary, this was in a sense the start of modern occupational hygiene. Our selection of papers for the previous IOHA Conference (vol. 45, no. 4) was sadly accompanied by Jerry Sherwoods obituary. With his strong involvement in international occupational hygiene and many fundamental developments, it is a happy coincidence that his key paper accompanies those from the 5th Conference.
