His first position in industry was with Courtaulds Ltd, where he was employed as an industrial chemist. This initial employment period from 1965 to 1970 involved some work experience during the graduation period and some full-time work. In this role, in addition to laboratory work he was also involved in the development of air sampling techniques and metal chemical analysis in connection with various air pollution emissions.

This initial interest in air sampling led to a career move into occupational hygiene when in 1970 he joined the Ford Motor Co. as a trainee occupational hygienist under the capable mentoring of Dr David Hickish. His initial responsibilities in Ford were to set up an occupational hygiene sample analysis laboratory. In this role he progressed to a senior occupational hygienist in the company and during this period also qualified as an occupational hygienist attaining, at that time, the British Examining Board’s Certificate of Operational Competence in Occupational Hygiene (1973) and later the Diploma in Professional Competence in Occupational Hygiene (1975).

In 1976 he joined BOC as their Group Occupational Hygienist, mainly concentrating on occupational hygiene issues in their UK operations. He has remained with BOC to the present day and is now their Group Occupational Hygiene Manager covering global operations.

Jeff’s involvement with the profession spans over 20 years and began in the early 1980s, when he sat on the BOHS Board of Management and was also first involved with the examinations side of the profession as secretary of the then British Examining Board in Occupational Hygiene (BEBOH).

Since that early time, Jeff has been continually involved with virtually all aspects of the profession in the UK, serving as an examiner, chairman and member of the examining Board (BEBOH/BERBOH), council member and President of the IOH (1992–1993) and, most recently, chief examiner of the BIOH. He was proud to be awarded an Honorary Fellowship of the BIOH in 2000.

Other professional inputs have been his major involvement in setting up the UK examining system in South Africa in the early 1990s and, more recently, the examining and accreditation systems for the renewed interest in asbestos.

Since being elected President of the BOHS he has been concerned with continuing the work on ‘Securing Health Together’, implementation of the five year business plan and, of course, considerable time on the merger of the BOHS and BIOH. With this latter work he has also acted as chairman of the Shadow Executive responsible for ensuring that all necessary actions and decisions are taken for the merger to proceed smoothly.
