The inadequacy of fibre-counting techniques is discussed based on scientific data and personal experience. The following aspects are considered: (i) only ‘respirable’ fibres are counted, but this is not enough; (ii) the fibres that are not considered ‘respirable’ (<5 µm) also possess biological activity; (iii) it is necessary to take into account characteristics of all fibres found in the breathing zone, but phase contrast optical microscopy (PCOM) techniques do not fit this purpose; (iv) as well as particle-size distribution and other characteristics of all fibres, it is important to know their mass; and (v) every PCOM technique is only an approximate indicator of the exposure to fibres.
